Unfortunately, most conventional medical systems do not routinely perform these tests. Typically, doctors limit cardiovascular examinations to simpler tests, such as measuring total cholesterol. The Patient and the Problems Let me share the real-life story of one of my patients, giving you an insight into how we assessed his chronic issues and gained a better understanding of his cardiovascular health. Hopefully, this will inspire you to take charge of your own well-being and work towards a state of optimal health. Our patient, a 50-year-old male, was plagued by chronic pain throughout his body, particularly in his lower back. The Comprehensive Lab Analysis I always conduct a thorough evaluation using a total of six tests. Below, I'll provide a list of these tests along with their corresponding costs, which I typically incur. These tests include: NMR ($50) Homocysteine ($18) CRP ($12) A1c ($8) Magnesium ($12) In addition, there is a $10 draw fee, resulting in a total cost of $120. By investing just $120, we can gain a clear understanding of your cardiovascular health and develop an effective plan for your overall well-being. While it cannot pinpoint the exact location of inflammation, it provides an indication of its presence and severity. Elevated CRP levels in the blood may also indicate the risk of blood clots and other cardiac diseases. Multiple studies have revealed a strong correlation between CRP levels and sudden death. Ideally, the CRP result should fall within the range of 0 to 3.0, with a value above 3 indicating a heightened risk of heart disease. Personally, I prefer to see this number below 1. In our patient's case, the test showed a reading of 8.54. Homocysteine: Another Marker of Inflammation Homocysteine is another marker I often evaluate to assess inflammation. Research has linked increased homocysteine levels to a higher risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, and more. Fortunately, dietary adjustments can often help regulate homocysteine levels. Typically, the range for homocysteine falls between 0 and 14.5, but I prefer to see it between 5 and 6. In our patient's case, the result came in at 13.2. Hemoglobin A1c and Fasting Insulin Fortunately, our patient's hemoglobin A1c readings were not far off from the ideal range, which was good news. The typical range for hemoglobin A1c is 4.8 to 5.6, and I aim to see my patients fall between 5 and 5.2. Our patient's result was 5.4, slightly higher but within an acceptable range. Similarly, his fasting insulin showed a slight elevation. The standard range for fasting insulin tests is 2.6 to 24.9, and I prefer my patients to fall between 5 and 6. Our patient's result was 7.2. While both of these tests showed only slight elevations, they signify the presence of inflammation that requires timely attention. The Importance of Magnesium Levels Assessing magnesium levels is crucial when evaluating the risk of heart disease. Magnesium is involved in 400 different enzymatic reactions throughout the body. Insufficient magnesium levels hinder the proper functioning of these reactions. Magnesium also helps relax your arteries. Low levels of magnesium can cause constriction in the muscle wall of your arteries, leading to increased blood pressure and putting additional strain on the endothelium. Typically, magnesium levels should range from approximately 4 to 7 in most tests. Personally, I prefer to see levels above 6. As of writing this article, we are awaiting the patient's magnesium test results. However, considering that a significant portion of the US population is magnesium deficient, it is likely that this patient will show low levels. Understanding LDL and LDL Particle Number While low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is an essential marker to assess, it can be confusing to interpret. The quantity of LDL in your system is not as critical as the size of the LDL particles. For instance, two individuals may both have a lab reading of 130mg/dL of LDL. However, one person may have more particles of smaller size, while the other has fewer particles that are larger. The individual with smaller particles faces a significantly higher risk of developing heart disease over time than the one with larger particles. To illustrate the difference between these particle sizes, imagine fluffy cotton balls gently floating versus small, hard BBs. The cotton balls float harmlessly, while the BBs can lodge between endothelial cells, causing damage. LDL and HDL Readings LDL readings come with additional information, including cholesterol levels. Cholesterol itself is not inherently bad. However, like LDL, it needs to be in the appropriate form and quantity. Ideally, I prefer to see triglyceride levels below 100 (our patient measured at 184: high triglycerides means too many carbs) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), often referred to as the "good" cholesterol, levels above 40 (our patient measured at 34). Additionally, our patient had low total particle counts of HDL. Regarding LDL, our patient had a reading of 177, which is relatively high. Moreover, his LDL particle number count (LDL-P) measured at 2,713, an extremely high value. Most particle counts should be lower than 1,000, with anything exceeding 2,000 considered "very high." The test I use also measures the size of LDL particles. Ideally, these particles should be larger than 20.6nm, at the very least. Unfortunately, our patient's readings showed particles sized at 20nm, indicating they were on the smaller side. Why In-Depth Testing Matters Focusing solely on one particular test may not provide a comprehensive understanding of a patient's risk for heart disease. It may only indicate certain symptoms while overlooking the presence of comorbidities that contribute to various problems, increasing the risk of heart issues in the future. Cholesterol levels often receive excessive attention. However, it is worth noting that 50% of heart attack survivors have normal cholesterol levels. The problem does not lie solely in cholesterol, and relying solely on this marker is inherently flawed. This is precisely why comprehensive testing is vital. By gathering a wide range of data, we gain a clearer picture of the underlying causes of the problem. This data drives our solutions to your health issues. The PULS Cardiac Test Using the PULS Cardiac Test (GD Biosciences, Inc, Irvine, CA), the researchers measured multiple protein biomarkers, including IL-16, sFas, and HGF, which are associated with inflammation and T cell infiltration of cardiac muscle. The test generates a score predicting the 5-year risk of a new ACS. The study was conducted on 566 patients aged 28 to 97, M:F ratio 1:1, seen in a preventive cardiology practice. The patients were tested 2 to 10 weeks following the second COVID vaccine shot and compared to their previous test results taken 3 to 5 months before the shot.     Chronic UTIs and High Glucose Chronic problems can put a major damper on your everyday life. Some chronic problems, such as UTIs, can be especially painful. Many chronic issues can be difficult to diagnose, making it extremely important to get to the root cause of the problem right away. Below is a case study of a 75-year-old patient of mine who suffered from chronic UTIs. She came in with damage from antibiotics back in 2017 presenting as neuropathy in her foot. Additionally, her legs felt extremely weak, she was experiencing pain in her hips, and her sleep schedule was completely thrown off. Blood Sugar Testing One of the first things we checked were her blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels. This is always one of my first go-tos when I get a new patient, because an imbalance of blood glucose can cause many different problems. Typically speaking, when we check blood sugar levels we want between 85 and 120. Anything outside of this range often results in inflammation, which can cause a wide range of problems. In her particular case, I noticed an issue with her blood sugar levels 30 minutes after eating a meal. She was experiencing a spike after every meal, signaling sugar dysregulation. Any time you have a problem already going on in your body, problems with your sugar regulation will make it worse. How Blood Sugar Relates to UTIs You may be wondering how blood sugar levels are connected to chronic UTIs. Bacteria love glucose. In fact, sugars are one of bacteria’s favorite foods. The simplest way to resolve this issue is by eating less sugars and focusing on high quality proteins and healthy fats. While tracking her blood sugar levels, I also had this patient keep a food journal. This allowed us to see exactly what foods were causing her glucose levels to spike. On her first day of tracking her foods she had almost no good proteins and healthy fats. In fact, the majority of her diet consisted of carbs. These carbs get digested into sugar, which is then passed into the blood. Excess sugar is filtered from the blood into the urine, allowing the bacteria to feed. Solving Her Problems With Diet This pattern of carb-heavy meals went on throughout most of her days. When the patient came to me with all of these sugar spikes, we were able to pinpoint exactly what the cause was by looking at her journal. As a side note, we also checked her labs for ferritin levels. Ferritin is another marker of inflammation, however this one is related to iron in the blood (another snack for bacteria). On a healthy readout, I like to see the range between 40 and 80. This patient’s ferritin levels were at 255. Ferritin can also be heavily influenced by diet, and is easy to manipulate. Roughly 20% of my clients end up having high ferritin levels. The problem is that ferritin is quite often overlooked in the conventional medical system. Once we knew the cause of her problem was likely diet related, we were able to put her on a wellness plan that included more proteins and healthy fats. She quickly began to improve, and she is still improving a lot to this day.

  • Autoimmune Diseases vs. Cancer: Uncovering the True Impact on Americans

    Autoimmune Mysteries Revealed Many people are unknowingly suffering from an underlying autoimmune disease. If you, like so many out there, are suffering from some sort of chronic issue, but no one has been able to figure out the cause of your problems, it is likely that you too are suffering from some sort of autoimmune disease. Putting it in Perspective You probably are not aware of just how prevalent autoimmune diseases are in the modern world. Let’s put it into perspective by comparing autoimmune diseases to another very common genre of disease: cancer. Cancer is a terrible disease. It has taken so many lives to the point that everyone knows someone who either has cancer or has died from cancer. And yet the number of people who suffer from autoimmune diseases in the United States is more than double the number of people with cancer. On top of that, autoimmune diseases cost Americans over $100 billion each year, while the cost to treat cancers rakes in $57 million yearly. And yet cancer gets $6.1 billion of funding to research cures and treatments, while autoimmune diseases only received $591 million. In fact, 1 in every 6 Americans will suffer from an autoimmune disease each year. In contrast, 1 in every 13 Americans will suffer from heart disease, and 1 in 33 will suffer from some form of cancer. There are over 80 different autoimmune diseases - that we know of - and over 50 million Americans are currently suffering or treating their issues. Interestingly 75% of all autoimmune patients are women. What Causes Autoimmune Disease? Autoimmune diseases are when the body attacks itself. Your immune system incorrectly responds against your body’s own tissues. Your immune system is constantly analyzing everything in your body, and trying to determine if it is a “friend” or a “foe.” Your immune system errs on the side of aggression, so if it is confused then it will respond by attacking those tissues. Think of it like your immune system getting drunk. It might recognize too much of a system or organ. Since having too many thyroids would be problematic, your immune system will decide to attack those tissues to remove the excess. If your autoimmune disease goes undiagnosed or untreated, then your immune system response will continue to ramp up its response. The inflammation caused by your system attacking itself will further trigger an immune response, only worsening your condition. What Forms Can Autoimmune Disease Take? This can happen in almost any system in your body, but most commonly takes these forms: - Multiple Sclerosis - Celiac Disease - Crohn’s Disease - Type 1 diabetes - Asthma - Arthritis - Lupus - Eczema - Psoriasis The three states of autoimmune disease: - Stage one: Silent autoimmunity. In this stage, you have elevated levels of antibodies, but no symptoms. - Stage two: Autoimmune reactivity. In this stage, you have symptoms, but no noticeable loss of tissue. - Stage three: Autoimmune disease. In this final stage, you have elevated antibodies, symptoms, and tissue destruction. For example, the vast majority of people who have hypothyroidism have an autoimmune disease. They will often see that their dose increases over time. This is because their thyroid has lost tissue, which lowers the amount of thyroid hormones it can produce. Red Flags for Autoimmune Disease Number 1: Nothing has cured you of your complaints or symptoms. If you have gone from doctor to doctor, or tried multiple different diets, but found little to no relief, then it is likely you have an autoimmune disease. Number 2: Various treatments have helped at various times. Sometimes you have flares and periods of remission. If you have experienced small periods of relief, or spikes in symptoms during some form of treatment, it may be that your problems are autoimmune-related. Number 3: Multiple sensitivities to foods, chemicals, smells, etc. Allergies and sensitivities show that your body is unable to properly regulate, likely due to an autoimmune issue. Number 4: Numerous diagnoses from multiple doctors. One doctor may have an idea of what is going on, and another may disagree. If you have gone from doctor to doctor or received multiple diagnoses for the same symptoms, then it is likely your problem is autoimmune in nature. Number 5: You have had tons of lab work done and you take a ton of supplements. If you find that you are taking a wide range of supplements to treat specific symptoms or issues found in your lab work, then it may be that you have an autoimmune disease affecting multiple systems. Number 6: You have been diagnosed with a condition, but do not know that it could be autoimmune-related. Common conditions that are frequently associated with autoimmune diseases include: - Hypothyroidism - Diabetes - Inflammatory Bowel Disease - Psoriasis - B-12 Anemia - Arthritis - Non-viral Hepatitis - Gluten Sensitivity - Interstitial Cystitis - Meniere’s Disease - Ulcerative Colitis - Crohn’s Disease How to Identify Autoimmune Disease The best way I have found to determine whether or not someone is suffering from an autoimmune disease is to do some blood work and check markers. For example, a Rheumatoid Factor reading above 14 is generally a sign of autoimmune disease, in this case, it takes the form of rheumatoid arthritis. Other markers you should check out include: - Antinuclear Antibodies, or ANA. (Ratio should be less than 1:80) - Thyroid antibodies. (TPO should be lower than 34, and thyroglobulin should be below 0.9) - Anti-Microglia, a type of antibody that frequently attacks the central nervous system. (Levels should be lower than 10) - Anti-Recoverin, which also attacks the central nervous system. (Levels also should be lower than 10) - Blood Brain Barrier permeability. (Range should be around 0.4-1.3) - Myelin Basic Protein (Levels should be between 0.6-1.7) - Cerebellar tissue (Levels should be between 0.4-1.5) - Many more, ranging from your bones to the adrenal system. Causes of Autoimmune Disease There are a wide range of causes of different autoimmune diseases. Some of them are directly responsible, while others simply initiate the autoimmune response. These causes can include: - Low vitamin D - Poor GI health - Poor cell membrane - Concussions - Antibiotic damage - Food sensitivities - Gluten - Dairy - Low blood sugar - Low blood pressure - Anemia - High inflammatory markers on labs - Mold in your system - Heavy metals in your system - Stress - High insulin levels - Being pre-diabetic - Infections, including long-term Covid or H. Pylori. - Hormone imbalances Treatment Options for Autoimmune Disease With autoimmune diseases attacking such a wide array of bodily systems, there is no single treatment plan. In fact, you often will need to personally tailor your treatment to your individual circumstances. This is why getting the full gamut of blood work is very important. If you do not take the time to get the full range of tests done, you probably will not be able to find relief. Think of it like a fishing net: the wider your net, the more issues you might catch. As I mentioned earlier, inflammation can lead to nerve degeneration and dysfunction, which are the hallmarks of neuropathy. Given the close connection between insulin levels and overall inflammation within your body, it becomes imperative to measure fasting insulin as a key marker during lab tests. Optimal fasting insulin levels should range between 5 and 6. Lab 3: C-Reactive Protein C-Reactive Protein serves as a crucial marker, indicating the levels of inflammation present throughout your body. Ideally, the concentration of this protein should be less than 1. However, I've encountered patients with levels surpassing 13. By addressing the underlying issues that contribute to elevated C-Reactive Protein, we've successfully lowered their markers and alleviated their neuropathy symptoms. Lab 4: Homocysteine Homocysteine serves as a marker that can cause damage to your blood vessels and capillaries. This damage impairs your body's ability to provide essential nutrients and maintain the health of your nerves, ultimately leading to degeneration. While high levels of homocysteine can be attributed to genetic factors as well as lifestyle choices, a healthy individual should strive to maintain homocysteine levels between 5 and 6. Elevated levels of this marker can indicate potential harm to your circulatory system, necessitating prompt treatment. By conducting these four crucial lab tests, you'll gain valuable insights into the underlying causes of your neuropathy. Armed with this knowledge, we can devise an effective treatment plan tailored to your unique situation, ensuring a successful journey towards lasting relief.

  • Discover the Hidden Cure to Anxiety and Depression – No Medications Needed!

    The Secret to Getting Rid of Anxiety and Depression There are many people today who are suffering anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and more. Unfortunately, when they go into the conventional medical system the only real solution they are presented with is to take some kind of drug. These medications often come in the form of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medicines. There are a number of functional medicine solutions to treating anxiety and depression as well, all of which are backed by research. In a functional medicine treatment plan, we would look at your entire bodily systems as a whole to figure out why you are experiencing these symptoms. Often, anxiety, depression, and panic attacks are neurological problems which are linked to one, or multiple of your body’s many systems. Figuring out these “weak” links can provide us with an idea of how to treat your problems without having to resort to medication. The research I am about to show you has helped hundreds of people recover from anxiety and depression. The Vocabulary Before we go too much further, we need to discuss some of the vocabulary. Microglia are the active immune defense (or white blood cells) that work in your brain. These cells float through the blood system in the brain searching for anything needing to be removed. Another word we need to understand is lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Very simply put, this is bacteria poop. Dr. Perlmutter, a well-known and widely published doctor, wrote in his book The Brain Maker, “If there were ever a clear biological villain that flips on the inflammatory pathways in the body, it would be the lipopolysaccharide.” We also call these types of compounds “endotoxins.” LPS and Your Gut Looking at your intestinal system, the barrier between your bloodstream and the digestive system is only one cell thick. If there are gut problems such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, etc., then you likely have what we call a “leaky gut.” Essentially, this means there are small holes in this barrier. Approximately 80-90% of your immune system is located in your digestive tract, which is 36 feet long. With a leaky gut, the bacteria that are normally healthy and helpful in your digestive system can leak into your bloodstream. Here they excrete waste, and cause you to have a wide range of health issues including (but not limited to) anxiety and depression. The Research Microglial Response and Inflammation Looking at MRI scans, we can tell when people suffer from anxiety and depression. A typical colorized MRI scan can show us what a “normal” brain looks like. In the attached photos it has a lot of green (which is good). Brains of people suffering from anxiety or depression often show up with lots of red, signaling inflammation. This means we can see a physical response in the brain to an otherwise completely mental or emotional condition. Additionally, we know what LPS looks like in the system. Because of this, we can specifically look for LPS and track its link to some of these mental/emotional conditions. During one study, patients had MRIs taken when they had low levels of LPS in their systems. After these scans, they were injected with LPS, and scanned again. After being injected with the endotoxin, their brains lit up with significant signs of inflammation. This response was due to the activation of their brains’ microglial (immune) cells. This caused inflammation, which in turn caused symptoms of depression and anxiety. Additionally, inflammatory markers around much of the rest of the body were noted, and patients reported symptoms of sickness, including anxiety and depression. Leaky Gut and Depression Another study showed a strong link between depression and leaky gut. This study also linked the problems of leaky gut to inflammation caused by the presence of LPS in the bloodstream due to intestinal mucosal dysfunction. In other words, patients with leaky gut reported higher levels of mood disorders than patients who had healthy digestive tracts. The authors of this study wrote, “There is now evidence that major depression (MDD) is accompanied by an activation of the inflammatory response system (IRS) and that pro-inflammatory cytokines and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) may induce depressive symptoms.” If your anxiety and mood disorders are being caused by a leaky gut, then using a medication that targets your brain functions will only have a minimal effect. How to Tell If Your Depression and Anxiety Are Gut-Related If you suffer from depression and/or anxiety, it may be difficult to tell if your symptoms are purely neurological or linked to your digestive tract. Typically speaking, patients whose depression and anxiety are linked to their gut health will also experience symptoms such as: - Increased reactions to food - Chronic gastrointestinal symptoms - Diarrhea - Constipation - Abdominal pain - Bloating - Irritable Bowels If you also have to take any kind of medication to treat digestive issues such as heartburn, you may have mood disorders linked to your gut health. Research is also showing that as many as 50% of people who have leaky gut or gastrointestinal issues are not manifesting symptoms with their digestive tract. In other words, you may have a leaky gut or some other digestive issue, but your symptoms only appear in other systems. Patients experiencing non-gastrointestinal symptoms may manifest their symptoms in the following ways: - Autoimmune diseases - Chronic pain - Chronic fatigue - Multiple food sensitivities - Mood disorders Single Cell Barriers Our blood-brain barriers and blood-brain barriers are designed almost the exact same way. Imagine this barrier to be a brick wall that is one brick thick. It can certainly be very strong, and keep everything out when done well. However, when the cement between the bricks begins to fall apart the entire wall is significantly less effective. Small things may make it through those holes, or eventually entire bricks may fall out. Large gaps allow more things to pass through. While our barriers may not be literal brick walls, they function much the same way. They are intended to keep different components that our bodies need, where our bodies need them to be. When those barriers are not working effectively, it can cause a myriad of issues all throughout the entire body. Possible Causes of Leaky Gut Leaky gut can be caused by a wide range of issues, which can make it very hard to diagnose. It is therefore vital to try and live a healthy lifestyle to limit the overall possible causes of leaky gut you may be experiencing, and thus limit your depression and anxiety. Leaky gut may be caused by any of the following issues: Diet - Alcohol intake - Gluten sensitivity - Casein sensitivity - Intake of processed foods - Excess sugar - Lots of fast food Medications - Corticosteroids - Antibiotics - Antacids Infections - H. Pylori - Bacterial overgrowth - Yeast overgrowth - Intestinal virus - Parasitic infection Stress - High cortisol - High CRH levels - High levels of catecholamines Hormonal imbalances - Low thyroid - Low progesterone - Low estradiol - Low testosterone Neurological - Brain trauma (including concussions from long ago) - Stroke - Neurodegeneration Metabolic - Glycosylated end products - Intestinal inflammation - Autoimmune conditions The Bottom Line This may be daunting. It looks like a lot to keep track of and that can be daunting to try to tackle. However, it also means you have a lot of different possibilities to get better.     Part 3 The Causes of Neuroinflammation As much as I wish I could tell you there was only one cause of neuroinflammation, that is simply not the case. If you’ve been following along in this series of blogs about “brain on fire” symptoms and causes, you’ve learned that neuroinflammation can be caused by fluoroquinolones or other drugs breaking down the blood brain barrier. However common this may be, other causes of neuroinflammation do exist and I’ll break those down for you here. It is important to know which is the cause of your specific case of neuroinflammation so that it can be addressed in a treatment plan for your recovery. What else can cause “brain on fire” symptoms? Some causes of neuroinflammation include head trauma, concussions, micro strokes, and stress. These causes are even more significant when you consider that the damage they do is irreversible. The importance of barriers The above graphic shows a cross-section of your bloodstream. Looking at the sections marked as “Early” and “Late” in the image, you can see ruptures in the artery surrounded by blood clotting proteins. As the figure demonstrates, the broken arteries can act like a garden hose that has been punctured. The pressure of the water inside the hose causes streams to shoot out through the punctures with some force. The same happens in your bloodstream, which can push unwanted substances through the blood brain barrier and into your brain. The attached astrocytes along with the inflammatory process in your brain will begin to cause damage, resulting in a range of symptoms. Leaky gut can cause leaky brain Like the blood brain barrier, the gut also contains a one-cell-thick membrane separating the stomach contents from the bloodstream. The above graphic shows a comparison between a healthy, impermeable gut membrane (left) and an unhealthy, leaky gut (right). Because of inflammation caused by a number of sources, the gut on the right has had its one-cell lining broken down, creating gaps large enough for a variety of unwanted material to breach into the blood. Once in the blood, these unrecognizable intruders trigger the immune system, which brings on symptoms such as negative reactions to certain foods. This inflammation can also cause malabsorption, meaning the essential nutrients in your food are not absorbed by the body. How do you know if you’ve got a leaky gut? For the majority of people, having two to three bowel movements per day without gas, diarrhea, bloating, or heartburn are signs of a healthy gut. Many people have leaky gut even if no gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are present. This leaky gut allows trillions of bacteria in the intestines to leak into the bloodstream, making their way eventually to the brain through the blood brain barrier. The end result is always inflammation. The Vagus Nerve and the Connection Between GI Issues and Brain Inflammation As the blood brain barrier begins to break down due to this leaky gut, a whole host of symptoms may appear. To make things even more frustrating, you may struggle to find someone who makes the connection between these new symptoms and GI or leaky gut issues. New research shows, though, how these issues relate, and it has to do with the vagus nerve. What is the vagus nerve? The vagus nerve extends from the lower intestines to the back of the human head. Research suggests that harmful bacteria from the gut can make its way to the brain through the vagus nerve, causing inflammation and other symptoms. This is why it's essential to address gut health issues to prevent neuroinflammation.     (Part 2) Testing for Neuroinflammation As discussed in Part 1 of this series, neuroinflammation - also known as "brain on fire" - is a common problem for those who have taken fluoroquinolones in the past. If you are experiencing symptoms ranging from brain fog to seizures, it's essential to identify if your brain is inflamed. There are various tests available to determine neuroinflammation. One of the latest tests available measures blood brain barrier permeability. This test assesses the integrity of the membrane between your blood and brain, and detects if your blood brain barrier is leaking, allowing proteins to enter your bloodstream that shouldn't be there. Understanding Blood Brain Barrier Permeability Screen The Blood Brain Barrier Permeability Screen measures whether the level of specific proteins in the blood is "in range" or "out of range." If the level is out of range, it indicates that the blood brain barrier is leaking, or starting to break down. Fluoroquinolones can damage the blood brain barrier since they are attracted to the fat tissue that makes up the brain. This damage causes inflammation because particles can enter your bloodstream where your immune system attacks them. Why Blood Brain Barrier is Susceptible to Damage The blood brain barrier is only one cell thick, and this makes it more vulnerable to damage. In comparison, the skin on your fingertip consists of tens of thousands of cells, which creates a barrier between the outside world and your blood. If the barrier between your bloodstream and brain is damaged, foreign substances can easily enter your brain. Just like food sensitivities, where proteins in food permeate the one-cell lining of the intestines, causing inflammation, the blood brain barrier can be impacted by foreign substances. Once the blood brain barrier is damaged, it loses its impermeability, resulting in a leaky brain. The Impact on Neurons The above graphic shows an impermeable blood brain barrier compared to a leaky one. When fluoroquinolones destroy the blood brain barrier, they can directly pass into the brain once the barrier deteriorates. These chemicals can destroy the mitochondria of your neuronal cells, also known as the "power packs," causing the cells to malfunction. Unlike other cells in the body, neurons cannot rebuild themselves after they've been damaged. Addressing the symptoms of neuroinflammation is crucial to protect your brain cells. The Role of Glial Cells in the Brain Research shows that neurons only make up about 10 percent of your brain's cells, while the rest (90 percent) are called glial cells. These cells include Schwann cells, oligodendrocytes, microglial cells, ependymal cells, and astrocytes, and they have different roles in the brain. The essential function of glial cells is to support and protect neurons, acting as your brain's immune system. When your immune system is compromised due to inflammation, glial cells mistakenly attack neurons, resulting in various symptoms. The Role of Glial Cells in Resolving Neuroinflammation Glial cells do far more than just hold neurons together. They have a range of functions, including regulating the body’s immune system and helping to form myelin, which is the insulation that surrounds neurons. When glial cells are inflamed, they can no longer perform these essential functions. The goal of resolving neuroinflammation is to restore health to the glial cells. When the immune system is functioning correctly, it can target and eliminate harmful pathogens and toxins. This helps to reduce inflammation and promote the body’s healing process. A healthy immune system also helps to protect the brain from future damage caused by pathogens or toxins. Conclusion In conclusion, neuroinflammation, or “brain on fire,” is a common problem among individuals who have taken fluoroquinolones in the past.     (Part 1) Understanding Neuroinflammation After countless hours of research, attending seminars, and treating hundreds of individuals in my practice, I've come to believe that neuroinflammation is one of the most commonly overlooked problems affecting people who have experienced fluoroquinolone toxicity. "Floxed" refers to individuals who experience symptoms resulting from the use of fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. These symptoms can range from extreme fatigue, tendon rupture, and joint and muscle pains to nerve pains and nervous system disturbances like neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation is inflammation of the brain, and it occurs when the brain's immune system is activated in response to an inflammatory challenge, such as the use of fluoroquinolones. Research shows that fluoroquinolones love fat tissue, and since the human brain is primarily composed of fat, neuroinflammation can present as a variety of problems. Many people who come to me for help are in a dichotomy, meaning they have symptoms that seem opposing or unrelated. The Variety of Neuroinflammation Symptoms For example, an individual may experience Achilles tendon pain accompanied by pain in their elbow. Others might report mood swings, anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, or simply not feeling or acting like themselves. However it manifests, it's essential to pinpoint this neuroinflammation and address it with a proper treatment plan in order to recover. If left untreated, a tendon tear will seem like nothing compared to the neurological problems that might lie ahead. Your Brain on Fire For someone with neuroinflammation, it's almost as if their brain is on fire. It's important to understand that the brain doesn't have pain receptors like other parts of the body. If you hit your thumb with a hammer, pain receptors will let you know that something is wrong by causing you to feel pain in your thumb. However, the brain doesn't respond in the same way. If you could theoretically hit your brain with a hammer, it would not elicit that same pain response. Instead, the brain signals there's something wrong using different methods, like brain fog, memory problems, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, insomnia, reduced brain endurance, and chronic fatigue. Chronic Fatigue and Other Symptoms of Neuroinflammation Chronic fatigue is a common symptom of neuroinflammation that I often see in patients. It's similar to driving your car around with the emergency brake on. The car has to work harder, requiring more energy and gas, just to complete the task it was meant for. That is your brain when it's inflamed. It has to work ten to twenty times harder when neuroinflammation is present, which results in a spectrum of symptoms ranging from slight brain fog to full-blown chronic fatigue. In extreme cases, untreated neuroinflammation can lead to coma, seizures, difficulty speaking, and tremors. The Subtle, Moderate, and Severe Symptoms of Neuroinflammation Many people have some or all of these symptoms, but it's essential to determine which are present and how to classify them. I've broken down the list of possible neuroinflammation symptoms into three categories: subtle, moderate, and severe. It's important to identify your symptoms so that they can be addressed properly with a treatment plan. Subtle symptoms of Neuroinflammation: Brain fog, reduced mental speed, and reduced brain endurance are classified as subtle symptoms of neuroinflammation. Experiencing brain fatigue after a long drive, where you’re being exposed to strain and stressors over a period of time, is one example. Another is experiencing brain fatigue after exposure to certain chemicals or scents, or after eating certain foods. Moderate symptoms of Neuroinflammation: Mental health disorders like depression and anxiety fall into this category. Inability to concentrate on tasks, excessive sleepiness, lack of motivation or appetite, insomnia, and the inability to be physically active are also moderate symptoms of neuroinflammation. Severe symptoms of Neuroinflammation: Difficulty speaking, tremors, disorientation, and involuntary twitching can be signs of severe neuroinflammation. Shaking, or lack of balance when completing simple tasks like walking, can also be present. More serious symptoms like seizures, dementia, and even coma are possible if left untreated. If these symptoms sound familiar to you, then you may be suffering from neuroinflammation or brain inflammation.     Introduction to the Vagus Nerve Is your brain causing problems with your gut? It might be! Your brain's condition can actually affect the health of your gut. One crucial element in this connection is the vagus nerve, a large nerve responsible for communication between your organs and your brain. When your brain is not in good shape, it can hinder the activity of the vagus nerve, ultimately leading to suboptimal digestive function. Spotting Poor Vagus Nerve Function There are ways to identify poor vagus nerve function through a simple examination. For instance, a healthcare practitioner can listen to your abdomen with a stethoscope and should be able to hear rumbling sounds. This rumbling indicates healthy bowel motility, which relies on the proper functioning of the vagus nerve. However, when the gut-brain connection is impaired, you may hear very little rumbling. Another sign of poor vagus nerve function is the inability of the uvula to rise. The uvula is the tissue hanging at the back of your throat, resembling a punching bag. When you say "ahh" during a doctor's visit, they observe whether the uvula rises as it should. If the vagus nerve is not functioning properly, the uvula will not rise much. Similarly, the gag reflex can provide insights into vagus nerve activity. If a person with chronic digestive problems and poor brain function exhibits poor gag reflex responses, it strongly suggests that the gut-brain connection is not functioning well. The Gut-Brain Axis and Neglected Patient Care Regrettably, many doctors tend to overlook the importance of the gut-brain axis in patients with chronic gut complaints. While interventions such as enzymes, probiotics, and other digestive aids can improve digestive health, it is essential to focus on enhancing brain health to support and improve the gut-brain axis. The Importance of Stimulating the Vagus Nerve Just like muscles, neurons require constant stimulation to stay healthy. If you break your arm and wear a cast, your muscles will shrink within a few weeks due to reduced activity. Neurons are no different—they need activation to maintain their function. It is important to note that 90 percent of the brain's output passes through the brainstem. When the brain is not functioning properly, it fails to adequately stimulate the vagus nerve, leading to reduced activity in the gastrointestinal tract. Strengthening the Vagus Nerve Functional medicine practitioners focus on rehabilitating the vagus nerve through exercises that strengthen it, similar to how muscles can be developed through targeted exercises. Functional neurology brain rehabilitation follows the same principle. By stimulating weak neurons, they can develop more proteins and become stronger, a process known as positive plasticity. This concept applies to any part of the brain. If you have a poorly functioning gut-brain axis and vagus nerve, specific neurological exercises can increase plasticity and improve the function of the vagus pathway. Vagal Exercises for Better Gut Health You can easily perform vagal exercises in the comfort of your own home. I often recommend the following exercises to my patients who have weak vagal tone and experience issues with the gut-brain axis: 1. Gargle The first exercise involves gargling with water several times a day. Gargling activates the muscles in the back of your throat that are controlled by the vagus nerve. By contracting these muscles, gargling stimulates the vagus nerve and enhances activity in the gastrointestinal tract. Make sure to drink several large glasses of water per day and gargle with each sip until you finish the glass. It should be challenging enough, just like using a heavier dumbbell to strengthen your arm. Perform this exercise consistently over several weeks to strengthen the vagal pathways. 2. Sing Loudly I also encourage my patients to sing as loudly as they can while driving or at home. Singing works the muscles in the back of the throat, activating the vagus nerve. Although it may bother your family members, I still recommend it for its beneficial effects on the gut-brain axis. 3. Gag Another exercise involves using tongue blades to stimulate the gag reflex throughout the day. Be careful not to hurt yourself by jabbing the back of your throat. Instead, place the tongue blade on the back of your tongue and push down gently to activate the gag reflex. Think of gag reflexes as doing push-ups for your vagus nerve, while gargling and singing loudly are like doing sprints. Consistently performing these exercises for several weeks will help strengthen vagal tone and improve the gut-brain axis. Remember, just like with weight training, you can't expect profound changes after only a couple of days. 4. Coffee Enemas For patients experiencing significant difficulties with regular bowel movements and brain degeneration, I recommend daily coffee enemas. The enema helps activate the vagus nerve by distending the intestines, while the caffeine in the coffee stimulates intestinal motility through cholinergic receptors. This aids in relieving bowel contents, which is crucial for overall health. Over time, many people notice improved bowel function and can gradually reduce their reliance on enemas. Coffee enemas also promote positive changes in the vagal system pathways. However, in cases of rapid brain degeneration surpassing the ability to gain positive changes, coffee enemas are used to prevent impacted bowels. Conclusion Even if you don't have severe constipation, leaky gut, or other gastrointestinal issues, it's still advisable to work on building vagal tone. Gargling, singing loudly, and performing gag reflexes can contribute to this effort. Remember, the loss of vagal tone is often a result of poor brain function. Therefore, it is essential to focus on strategies that improve overall brain health when addressing gut function. By diligently practicing these exercises and incorporating them into your routine, you can strengthen your vagus nerve, improve gut health, and enhance the gut-brain axis.

    Thyroid Hormone Deficiency and Brain-Based Symptoms If you struggle with chronic depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders, you may suffer from undiagnosed or poorly managed hypothyroidism. A thyroid hormone deficiency can cause multiple brain-based symptoms. Thyroid hormones play an important role in the function of many areas of the brain, including neuron health, brain immune cells called neuroglia, and the blood-brain barrier. If you have a chronic mood disorder, consider asking your doctor to screen for hypothyroidism with a TSH test and for autoimmune Hashimoto’s with a TPO and TGB antibody test in order to rule these conditions out. Hypothyroidism and Depression: Impact on Neurotransmitters Thyroid hormones impact major neurotransmitter receptors in the brain such as serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and acetylcholine. These neurotransmitters help regulate your mood, motivation, and executive function. The majority of research during the last 30 years has largely focused on the neurotransmitter model of depression, which emphasizes serotonin and dopamine imbalances and the development of pharmaceutical antidepressants to correct such imbalances. However, most patients experience only limited success managing their depression with these drugs. The Inflammatory Model of Depression and Brain Inflammation An explosion of research has found a connection between depression and inflammation, called the inflammatory model of depression. In these patients, brain inflammation slows nerve conduction and synaptic speed. This decreased speed causes depression by slowing activity in the relevant regions of the brain. Because these cases are a result of inflammation, traditional antidepressants are ineffective. Inflammation-related depression can be caused by a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or systemic inflammation throughout the body. Unmanaged Hashimoto’s is another possibility that causes systemic inflammation. The fluctuations typical with the condition also mean thyroid levels wax and wane, and periods of low thyroid levels can result in significant depression. This could explain why your depression persists even after you begin treating your hypothyroidism. Blood Sugar Fluctuations and Mood Instability Whenever a patient mentions mood instability, my first instinct is to check their blood sugar. This is because blood sugar highs and lows are very common causes of mood fluctuations. Anyone who has been “hangry” can attest to this. Hashimoto’s patients often have unstable blood sugar levels, which makes them more prone to insulin resistance and both high and low blood sugar. Brain Autoimmunity and Hashimoto’s Disease When the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, it is targeting TPO enzymes and TGB proteins. Antibodies to TPO and TGB are used to screen for Hashimoto’s. Unfortunately, sometimes these TPO and TGB antibodies bind to cerebellum tissue in the brain, causing some Hashimoto’s patients to develop brain autoimmunity. This inflames and degenerates the brain and can cause depression. The Role of the Blood-Brain Barrier Systemic inflammation from unmanaged Hashimoto's is associated with intestinal permeability, otherwise known as leaky gut. Leaky gut patterns have been shown to make the blood-brain barrier overly permeable, which makes the brain much more prone to inflammation, thus causing depression. We published a 2020 study in the International Journal of Molecular Science that showed a connection between inflammatory bowel disease and a “leaky” blood-brain barrier in patients with autoimmune disease. The Gluten Connection Two-thirds of people with a gluten sensitivity experience neurological symptoms instead of gut symptoms. This is because the tissue most affected by a gluten sensitivity is nerve tissue. The majority of Hashimoto’s patients are gluten-sensitive or have celiac disease, which means gluten can play a role in their depression and anxiety. Gluten cross-reacts with dairy, meaning the immune system recognizes dairy as gluten. Many patients find their mood disorders significantly improve by eliminating these two foods from their diet. Hypothyroidism and Anxiety Anxiety is increasingly common these days. Neurologically speaking, anxiety is caused by heightened activity in the amygdala and the limbic regions of the brain. The amygdala is responsible for regulating fear and aggression, and the limbic regions play a role in processing the whole spectrum of human emotions. You can often calm yourself down during an anxious moment by taking the time to reason through the issue. This is because activating the frontal lobe through problem-solving reduces activity in the limbic regions – but brain fatigue, inflammation, unhealthy neurotransmitter activity, and slow nerve conduction all compromise the brain’s ability to prevent overactivation of the amygdala and limbic region. The result? Massive anxiety. Is Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s Behind Your Mood Disorder? You can ask your doctor for a few tests if you think hypothyroidism is causing your depression, anxiety, or other mood issues. A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test screens for hypothyroidism. However, keep in mind that TSH levels fluctuate frequently, and you may receive a false negative depending on when you test. If symptoms strongly suggest hypothyroidism, consider retesting. It’s also important to screen for TPO and TGB antibodies, as the most common cause of hypothyroidism is autoimmune Hashimoto's. These levels can also fluctuate, especially in the early stages. No Single Remedy for Depression and Anxiety Unfortunately, there is no simple solution for anxiety and depression. Rarely will a single medication or supplement unwind the various mechanisms that underlie these conditions. Instead, you must go through the process of untangling the web. This path is different for each person. It could include changing your diet, reducing inflammatory foods, or making other lifestyle changes. Perhaps you need to address your gut health, your microbiome, or your blood sugar. There are many different variables, and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. In conclusion, understanding the connection between hypothyroidism and chronic depression and anxiety is crucial in providing comprehensive care to individuals struggling with these mood disorders. Upon seeking my guidance, he complained of several distressing symptoms, including: Chronic neck and back nerve pain Muscle loss Joint and tendon deterioration Unveiling the Case Study As part of my thorough approach, I conducted an extensive range of blood tests to uncover the underlying factors contributing to his health issues. The results revealed 19 markers slightly deviating from optimal levels (not entirely alarming, but certainly not ideal), 12 markers falling outside the standard range (requiring prompt attention), and 3 markers with alarmingly high values. The Patient's Iron Levels Notably, two out of the three markers with alarmingly high values were associated with iron, while the remaining iron-related markers were also elevated. Consequently, I diagnosed him with iron overload—an excess of iron in his body—a condition that had gone unnoticed by his previous healthcare providers. For instance, his ferritin levels were recorded at a staggering 613. Typically, the desired range for ferritin is between 40 and 150. However, I prefer to see ferritin levels between 40 and 80 for optimal health. Furthermore, his elevated iron markers negatively impacted various systems within his body, including his liver, which was functioning poorly due to iron overload. The Dangers of High Iron Levels Imagine a bicycle made of steel or iron left out in the rain—over time, it begins to rust. Similarly, when your body contains an excess of iron, your organs essentially start rusting, gradually losing their functionality and shutting down. This occurs because your cells become overwhelmed, hindering the mitochondria's ability to generate energy effectively. As a result, you may experience chronic pain and other neurological symptoms, such as sleep difficulties. Addressing High Iron Levels In severe cases, healthcare professionals may prescribe regular blood draws every two to three weeks to reduce iron levels in the body. Fortunately, for most individuals, there are a few practical approaches to tackling high iron levels independently. Option 1: Donate Blood One effective method is to regularly donate blood. By doing so, you not only lower your iron levels but also assist those in need of blood transfusions.
